Introduction

Thank you for visiting Onymu at onymu.com ("we", "us", "our").

This Privacy Policy and Cookie Notice explains what information we collect through our website and services (the "Site"), how we use and share it, and the choices you have.

We do not sell personal data and only use information as described below.

Questions go to [email protected].

Information you provide

Account

The search and generator work without an account. If you create one, with an email address and password or by signing in with Google, we store your email address, a display name, a hashed password (never the password itself) and, for Google sign-in, the identifier Google provides. Email addresses are used to sign you in, to confirm changes to your account and to send a password reset or account deletion link when you ask for one.

What you save

With an account you can bookmark domain names, mark favorite extensions (TLDs) and keep a history of the names you searched for or generated from. These are stored so you can come back to them, and only for you.

Saved domains, searches and generations

None of these needs an account. The names you bookmark, the names you look up and the keywords you generate from are kept in your browser's local storage on the device you used, they are never sent to us on their own, and clearing your browser data removes them.

If you sign in, what that browser holds is added to your account so it follows you to another device. Each of the three lists has its own switch under Privacy in your account settings: “Save my favorite domains”, “Save my searches” and “Save my generations”. While one is off, nothing is recorded on the account from the Site or from an assistant connected over MCP, and whatever the account already held is deleted — the copy in your browser is left alone.

Contact form

When you write to us we receive the name, email address and message you enter, and use them only to reply.

Information collected automatically

Usage analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand which pages and tools are used and how the Site performs. This covers pages visited, interactions with the tools, referral sources and browser and device type.

It only runs if you accept it. On your first visit a banner asks, and Google Analytics is not loaded at all until you say yes: decline, and no script is fetched, no cookie is written and nothing is sent to Google. Your answer is remembered in your browser's local storage rather than in a cookie, and “Cookie settings” in the footer reopens it at any time. If you accept and later decline, we switch the measurement off and delete the analytics cookies.

Even with analytics accepted, advertising features, remarketing audiences and personalisation signals are disabled, and IP addresses are anonymised and not stored. We never link analytics to your account.

Server logs and abuse prevention

Our servers and hosting providers record technical data about requests, including the IP address, to keep the Site running, to rate-limit abusive traffic and to investigate errors. These logs are kept for a short period and are not used to build profiles.

Searches

Names you type into the search or generator are sent to our servers to be checked or expanded. Without an account they are not associated with you. With an account they are kept in your history until you delete them, or not kept at all if you have switched that history off.

Cookies

The Site uses two cookies at most, and neither is set without a reason you control:

  • a session cookie that keeps you signed in, set when you sign in and cleared when you sign out. It is essential to having an account and is not used for tracking,
  • Google Analytics cookies, set only after you accept them on the consent banner and deleted again if you change your answer.

There are no advertising cookies, and nothing here follows you to another site. Your theme choice, your answer to the consent banner and the domains, searches and generations you keep in the browser are held in local storage on your device rather than in cookies, and clearing your browser data removes them.

You may also disable cookies in your browser. Signing in requires the session cookie; everything else on the Site works without one.

How we use information

  • to operate and maintain the Site and your account,
  • to provide the search, generator, bookmarks, favorites and history,
  • to respond to messages you send us,
  • to analyse usage and performance and improve the Site,
  • to prevent abuse and keep the service reliable,
  • to comply with legal obligations.

How we share information

We share information only with providers that help us run the Site:

  • hosting and infrastructure providers that run our servers and database,
  • an email delivery provider, for sign-in confirmations, password resets and replies,
  • Google, when you choose to sign in with Google and, if you accepted analytics, for the analytics described above,

and otherwise only as required by law or legal process, or to protect the rights, property or safety of users or the public.

We do not sell or rent personal information.

Third-party links

The Site links to third-party registrars and lookup services (for example to register a name or to inspect its WHOIS record). Some of these links may be affiliate links, in which case we may earn a commission at no cost to you. When you follow a link, the third party's privacy policy applies, and we do not control or receive the data they collect.

Legal basis for processing (GDPR)

For users in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, we process data on the basis of:

  • performance of a contract, to provide the account and the features you use,
  • legitimate interests, to run, secure and improve the Site,
  • consent, for analytics cookies, which are set only if you accept them and can be withdrawn from the footer at any time, and for anything you choose to send us.

International data transfers

Our providers may process information in the European Union and the United States. Where personal data leaves the EEA, appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses are used.

Data retention

  • Account data, bookmarks, favorites and history are kept until you delete them or your account.
  • The account copy of your saved domains, searches and generations is kept only while the matching switch in your account settings is on. Switching one off deletes what the account held.
  • The browser copy stays in your browser until you remove it or clear your browser data.
  • History lists are capped, and the oldest entries are removed automatically when the cap is reached.
  • Contact messages are kept as long as needed to handle your request.
  • Server logs are kept for a short period for security and troubleshooting.
  • Analytics data, where you accepted it, is retained according to Google Analytics' retention settings, and the cookies are deleted as soon as you withdraw consent.

Your rights

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

  • access your personal data,
  • request correction or deletion,
  • restrict or object to processing,
  • receive a copy of your data in a portable format,
  • withdraw consent at any time,
  • lodge a complaint with a data protection authority.

Signed-in users can export everything we hold, switch off the account copy of their saved domains, searches and generations, and delete their account from the account settings page at any time. For anything else, write to [email protected].

We will never discriminate against users for exercising their privacy rights.

Data security

We maintain reasonable technical and organisational safeguards, such as encrypted connections, hashed passwords and access controls, to protect information against loss, unauthorised access or misuse. No system can be guaranteed to be completely secure.

Children

The Site is not directed at children and is not intended for individuals under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If we learn that we have, we delete it promptly.

Other sites

The Site may link to third-party websites. We are not responsible for their content, privacy policies or practices.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy and Cookie Notice from time to time. Changes take effect when posted on this page, and the revision date above tells you when that last happened.
