The cleanest naming profile of any extension near its size.
A natural fit for agencies, studios and transformation programmes.
Excellent availability, including company names long gone from .com.
Backed by the largest extension portfolio operator in the industry.
Supports DNSSEC through most registrars for added DNS integrity protection.
History
.digital was one of the extensions Donuts brought to market during its 2014 rollout, when the company launched new strings on a near-weekly basis after applying for more than 300 of them. It was delegated in May 2014 and has been an Identity Digital extension since Donuts and Afilias merged under that brand in 2022.
Timeline
Usage and applications
.digital suits agencies, studios, consultancies and internal transformation programmes. The word does the describing, so the name in front of it can be a plain company name. It has the cleanest registration profile of any extension in its size band by some distance: only about one new name in thirty carries a digit, against a quarter or more for most of its neighbours, and names average thirteen characters, which is the signature of real words joined together rather than generated strings.

Key milestones
Who is .digital for?
Agencies, studios, consultancies and internal transformation programmes: anywhere the word digital is already in how you describe yourself. It lets the part before the dot stay a plain company name.
Is .digital taken seriously?
The registration data suggests it is. Only about one new .digital name in thirty contains a digit, against a quarter or more across most extensions of its size, which means the names are being chosen rather than generated.
Why are .digital names so long?
They average around thirteen characters, longer than most extensions. That is what real words joined together look like, company names and descriptive phrases rather than short generated strings.
Who runs the .digital registry?
Identity Digital, which was Donuts when the extension launched in 2014. Donuts applied for more than 300 extensions in 2012 and merged with Afilias under the Identity Digital name in 2022.
What is the renewal price like?
Higher than the first year at most registrars, registration can be a couple of dollars while renewal runs into the thirties. Check the renewal figure before you commit to a name you intend to keep.
Is .digital better than .agency or .studio?
It is broader. .agency and .studio say what kind of business you are, .digital says what field you work in, which suits a consultancy or an internal programme better than a creative shop.
Does .digital affect search rankings?
No. Extensions carry no ranking weight. The practical benefit is that the address explains the business before anyone clicks it.
Can anyone register a .digital domain?
Yes. There are no residency, business or documentation requirements anywhere in the world.
What was the first .digital domain?
The oldest in our WHOIS records is donuts.digital, dated 7 July 2014, the registry operator registering its own name in the extension's launch year.
Is .digital a good fit for a corporate transformation programme?
It is one of the clearest uses for it. A separate address for the programme keeps it distinct from the main corporate site while still reading as official.
