The domain market, measured
About 7.9M domains are registered every month across the 700 extensions we see in use. .com takes 40% of them on its own, more than every other extension combined outside the top ten. .lol is growing fastest, up 840% on the same months of last year. The extensions differ far more than their marketing suggests: 75.5% of new .top names contain a digit against 3.5% of .ai names, which is the clearest signal of whether an extension is being registered in bulk or chosen by a person.

What Are Domain Extensions
Domain extensions, also called top level domains or TLDs, appear at the end of a website address. They help identify the purpose or location of a website. Popular options include global extensions like .com and country based extensions like .io and .co, each offering different advantages.
Types of Domain Extensions
Domain extensions are grouped into categories based on their purpose and usage.
Generic Top Level Domains
Generic TLDs are available to users worldwide. They include widely recognized extensions such as .com, .net, .org, and many newer options that suit modern brands.
Country Code Top Level Domains
Country code TLDs represent specific countries or regions. While originally local, many have gained global popularity due to branding and availability benefits.
Sponsored Top Level Domains
Sponsored TLDs are restricted to specific organizations or industries. These extensions are managed by official authorities and have clear usage rules.
New Generic TLDs
New gTLDs provide descriptive and industry focused options. They allow businesses to choose domain names that match their services or technology focus.
Benefits of Choosing the Right Domain Extension
Your domain extension plays an important role in how users and search engines view your website.
Stronger Brand Identity
The right extension can reinforce your brand message and improve credibility with your audience.
Search Engine Visibility
Many extensions are treated as generic by search engines, allowing websites to reach a global audience.
More Name Availability
Alternative domain extensions often provide more options when your preferred name is unavailable under common extensions.
Audience Targeting
Local extensions help target specific regions, while global extensions support international reach.
Featured TLDs
Pricing, history and registration rules for each extension, with a search for available names.

What is a top level domain
A top level domain is the final part of a domain name that appears after the dot. Common examples include .com, .org, .net, and .io. TLDs help classify websites and indicate their purpose or region.
What is the difference between gTLD and ccTLD
Generic TLDs are available to anyone and include extensions like .com and .net. Country code TLDs are linked to specific countries, though many are used globally due to branding appeal.
How do I choose the best domain extension
Choose a domain extension based on your audience, brand goals, availability, and market focus. Technology brands often use modern extensions, while traditional businesses may prefer well known options.
Are all domain extensions available to everyone
Most domain extensions are open for public registration, but some are restricted. For example, educational and government extensions require eligibility verification.
Do domain extensions affect SEO
Domain extensions do not directly impact rankings, but some are treated as generic and can rank globally. Content quality and authority remain the most important SEO factors.
How much does a domain extension cost
Domain prices vary by extension. Standard domains are usually affordable, while premium or niche extensions may have higher registration and renewal costs.
How many domains are registered every month?
About 7.9M a month across the 700 extensions we see in active use. That is new registrations rather than the total number of domains in existence, which is far larger. Most domains registered in any month were already registered the month before.
Which domain extension is the most popular?
.com, and not narrowly: it takes 40% of every new domain registered, against 4.5% for .xyz in second place. Four decades after it launched, roughly two in five new registrations anywhere still end in .com.
Which domain extension is growing fastest?
.lol, up 840% against the same months of last year, at around 130k new registrations a month. Growth at that rate is usually a registry promotion rather than a shift in demand, so it is worth checking what an extension renews at before reading a spike as adoption.
How many domain extensions are there?
We see 700 extensions with real registration activity this year. The root zone holds more than that, but a large share of them are brand extensions that only their owner can register, or strings that were delegated and never meaningfully launched.
Why do some domain extensions have so many numbers in their names?
Because they are being registered in bulk rather than chosen. 75.5% of new .top names contain a digit, against 3.5% of .ai names. Names generated in quantity reach for numbers once the words run out, so the digit share is the quickest way to tell whether an extension is mostly businesses or mostly volume.
Which domain extensions use the most hyphens?
.icu leads at 34.5% of new names. Hyphens come from two very different places: bulk registration joining words together mechanically, and languages like German where compound names are normal. High hyphen and high digit shares together point at the first.
Do people register domains for more than one year?
Rarely. Even at the top of the range, .com sees only 9% of new registrations taken for two years or more, and everywhere else it is a rounding error. The exception is .ai, where the registry requires a two-year minimum, so a one-year .ai registration does not exist.
Which extensions have the shortest domain names?
.top averages 7.5 characters before the dot, against around twelve and a half for .com. A short average means one of two things: an extension where good short names are still available, or one where names are generated rather than written.
How many domains are actually being used?
Fewer than are registered. On .site, around 24.5% of domains point at a parking page or a for-sale lander rather than a working site, the highest share we measure. This comes from the nameservers a domain uses and reflects 2025, the last period for which that data is complete.
Which registrar registers the most domains?
It depends entirely on the extension, and the concentration varies enormously. On .lol, Onamae.com handles 83.5% of new registrations on its own. On .com, the largest registrar accounts for roughly a sixth, the most competitive market of any large extension.
When do most domains come up for renewal?
May 2027 is the busiest month ahead, with about 16M domains reaching their renewal date. Renewal peaks trail registration peaks by exactly a year, so a promotion that fills one month fills the same month twelve months later, and whatever is not renewed then becomes available again.
Are any domain extensions shrinking?
Yes. .sbs is registering 30% fewer new domains than in the same months of last year. Decline in new registrations usually follows the end of a promotional cycle rather than a collapse in an extension's usefulness.
