    The company the holder registered through, its ICANN number, its website and its abuse desk. In practice the only party you can contact about the name.

    Dates

    When the name was first registered, when it was last changed, and when the current term runs out — drawn on one rail with today marked, so the arithmetic is done for you.

    Status codes

    The registry's own EPP codes, each printed with what it means. Most are routine locks, but redemption and pending delete mean a name is on its way back to being free.

    Nameservers

    Who answers DNS for the domain, with the glue addresses where the registry publishes them, and the provider read off the hostnames.

    DNSSEC

    Whether the delegation is cryptographically signed, and the DS records that sign it — key tag, algorithm and digest, as the registry holds them.

The life of a domain name

Registered to released, with the windows that decide when — and whether — a taken name becomes free again.

  1. 01Registered1–10 years

    Somebody holds the name for a term they paid for. Registries sell up to ten years at a time, and the term can be extended at any point, which is why an expiry date so rarely arrives.

  2. 02Add grace period5 days

    Immediately after registration, the registrar can still delete the name for a full refund. Buying and dropping names inside this window is how domain tasting worked until ICANN priced it out.

  3. 03Expirythe date on the record

    The term ends. Nothing happens: at almost every registrar the default is auto-renew, and a name that lapses does so because somebody let it, not because the date arrived.

  4. 04Auto-renew graceup to 45 days

    Past the date, the registrar has usually renewed the name already and is chasing payment. It still resolves, often behind a parking page, and can be recovered at the ordinary price.

  5. 05Redemption30 days

    The registration has actually been deleted. Only the former holder may take it back, at a restore fee on top of the renewal, and nobody else can register it. This is the state our results call out.

  6. 06Pending deleteabout 5 days

    Redemption passed with nobody restoring it. The name cannot be registered or restored — it is simply queued for the drop, and the date is now predictable.

    Back in the pool. Backorder and drop-catching services fire the moment the registry opens it, so a desirable name is gone within seconds and first-come is rarely literal.

Redemption period
The registration has been deleted and is in its 30-day grace period. If the holder does not restore it, the name is released.
Pending delete
Redemption has passed. The name is queued for release, usually within days.

Recent activity that can still be reversed.

Auto-renew period
Recently renewed automatically. It can still be cancelled by the registrar.
Add grace period
Registered within the last five days. The registrar can still delete it for a full refund.
Renew grace period
Renewed within the last five days, and the renewal can still be reversed.
Transfer grace period
Transferred to a new registrar within the last five days.

Locked by the holder

Set at the registrar. The absence of a transfer lock says more than its presence.

Transfer locked
The holder has locked the name against transfer. Routine, and the default at most registrars.
Delete locked
The holder has locked the name against deletion.
Update locked
The holder has locked the name against changes.
Renewal locked
The registrar has blocked renewal. Unusual: it can mean the holder is letting the name lapse on purpose.
On hold
The registrar has withdrawn the name from DNS. It stays registered but does not resolve.

Set above the registrar, so the registrar alone cannot undo it.

Transfer locked (registry)
The registry itself has locked the name against transfer, usually a registry lock, a dispute or a legal hold.
Delete locked (registry)
The registry itself has locked the name against deletion. Usually a registry lock product or a legal hold.
Update locked (registry)
The registry itself has locked the name against changes. Usually a registry lock product or a legal hold.
Renewal locked (registry)
The registry has blocked renewal, which usually means a dispute over the name.
On hold (registry)
The registry has withdrawn the name from DNS.

What it will not tell you

The four things people come to a Whois lookup for that no registry publishes.

  1. Who owns it

    Redacted by default since GDPR in 2018. An organisation name sometimes survives, because the regulation protects people rather than companies; a person's name almost never does.

  2. Whether it is for sale

    No registry publishes a price. The nearest signal is the delegation: nameservers pointed at an aftermarket service mean somebody is waiting for an offer, and we say so when we see it.

  3. What it is worth

    Registration data carries age, term length and how carefully a name is locked down. Those correlate with value, but none of them is a valuation.

  4. Who held it before

    A registration record is a snapshot, not a history. The creation date survives a change of owner, which is why an old name can have a new holder and read as though nothing happened.

Questions

What is WHOIS?

WHOIS is how a domain registry answers the question 'who holds this name, and until when'. It has been answering it since 1982, over a plain-text protocol on port 43. Its replacement, RDAP, returns the same facts as structured JSON and is now mandatory for every generic extension. Both are still in use: around 240 extensions publish no RDAP service at all, including .de, .io, .co, .eu, .ch, .at, .be, .dk and .jp, and every result here names the protocol its answer came from.

Why does the record not show the owner's name?

Since GDPR took effect in 2018, registries and registrars redact personal data from public registration records by default. What remains is the registrar, the important dates, the status codes and the nameservers, which is what this page shows. Contact details are generally only released through the registrar's own request process, or to parties with a legal basis for asking.

The domain is taken. When will it be free?

Usually never: most registrations renew automatically, so an expiry date is not a release date. The exception is worth watching for, and this page calls it out. A status of 'redemption period' means the registration has actually been deleted and sits in a 30-day window in which only the former holder may restore it. 'Pending delete' means that window has passed and the name is queued for release, normally within five days.

Why does it say the answer came from DNS?

A small number of extensions publish neither RDAP nor WHOIS. For those, the only remaining signal is whether the name resolves at all, which correlates strongly with registration but is not the registry's word, since a name can be registered with no nameservers ever configured. Where that happens the answer is labelled 'dns' rather than presented as authoritative.

Does looking a domain up here register it, or tip anyone off?

No. This is a read-only query to the registry, the same one any WHOIS client makes, and nothing about it is passed to a registrar. Domain front-running from public lookup tools is a persistent rumour rather than a documented practice, but if it worries you, the safest habit is to register a name promptly once you have decided on it.

Can I look up an internationalised domain?

Yes. Type it in its own script, so münchen.de works, and it is converted to the punycode form registries answer about, which is shown alongside the name you typed.

How reliable is the estimated release date?

Treat it as a window, not an appointment. It is arithmetic on ICANN's own periods — 30 days of redemption, then up to five of pending delete — counted from the last change to the record, which is when the deletion was registered. Registries then run their own drop schedules on top of that, so a name that looks due on a Tuesday can go on a Thursday. It is also worth knowing that dropping names are caught by backorder services within seconds of release, so being early matters more than being exact.

What does the DNSSEC section mean?

A DS record at the registry is the top link in a chain of cryptographic signatures over a domain's DNS. When one is published, a resolver that validates can tell a genuine answer for that domain from a forged one; when there is none, DNS answers about the name are taken on trust. Most domains publish none, so an unsigned delegation is normal rather than a fault. Where the registry does publish DS records we show the key tag, the signing algorithm and the digest exactly as it holds them.

Why do some nameservers have an IP address under them?

Those are glue records. When a domain's nameservers live under the domain they serve — ns1.example.com answering for example.com — finding them would require already knowing where they are, so the registry publishes their addresses alongside the delegation to break the circle. A nameserver hosted elsewhere needs no glue, which is why most records show none.
