Estimates rounded from our own WHOIS observations. Figures count domains registered, not domains held. This is a selection rather than the full field: wholesale platforms that sell only through resellers are not compared, which is why some extensions on this site show a leading registrar with no page here. Last measured September 2026.
Registrars we compare
Which domain registrar is the biggest?
GoDaddy registers the most, around 1M domains a month, or 13% of everything registered anywhere. Namecheap is second at 11.5%. These count domains registered rather than domains held: a registrar's total book is much larger than what it adds in any year.
Which registrar is growing fastest?
Spaceship has gained the most share, +2.9pp of the whole market against the same months last year, taking it to 6%. Gname.com has moved the other way, down 1.6 points to 1.5%.
What is an IANA registrar ID?
The permanent number ICANN assigns to each accredited registrar. It appears in every WHOIS record as the Registrar IANA ID, and it is the only stable way to identify one: the names vary between registries, so the same company turns up under three different spellings. Holding an ID means the company is contracted directly with ICANN and the registries. A reseller has none, because it sells through somebody else's.
How many domain registrars are there?
More than two thousand hold an ICANN accreditation, though most register very few domains. The comparison here covers the ones that both register at scale and sell directly to the public. Wholesale platforms are not included, because their volume is the pooled customers of thousands of resellers rather than their own, and a ranking meant to help you choose where to buy should not be led by companies that will not sell to you.
Which registrar offers the most domain extensions?
Dynadot, which registered domains across 595 different extensions this year. The range is wide: the narrowest in this comparison sells a handful. If you want something outside the common endings, the catalogue matters more than the headline price.
Do different registrars attract different customers?
Visibly. 56.5% of the names registered through Gname.com contain a digit, against 4% at Squarespace Domains LLC. A high digit share is the signature of names generated in bulk rather than chosen, so it separates registrars selling to businesses from those selling to volume registrants.
Which registrar's customers register for the longest?
Squarespace Domains LLC, where 32.5% of new registrations run beyond a single year. Almost everywhere else it is a small minority, so a multi-year share says something about both the customer and how hard the registrar pushes longer terms.
Do people keep their DNS at the registrar they bought from?
Often, but read the figure carefully. 100% of domains registered through Cloudflare Registrar sit on cloudflare.com. For some registrars that is their own DNS and does mean customers stayed; for others the most common nameserver is a parking host, which means the domains are unused rather than loyal.
Does it matter which registrar I use?
For the domain itself, no: the name works identically wherever it is registered, and you can transfer it after sixty days. What differs is renewal pricing, which extensions are available, whether WHOIS privacy costs extra, and how painful a transfer out is. The first-year price is the least useful number of those.
