History

The .xyz top level domain was introduced in 2014 as part of ICANN's new gTLD expansion program. Conceived by Daniel Negari and operated by XYZ.COM LLC, the extension was designed as a fully generic namespace with no predefined meaning or industry constraint. A defining moment occurred in 2015 when Alphabet Inc., Google's parent company, adopted abc.xyz as its primary corporate domain, dramatically accelerating global recognition and adoption.

Usage and applications

The .xyz domain is widely used by Web3 platforms, blockchain protocols, fintech startups, creative professionals, AI projects, and experimental consumer brands. It is particularly strong among communities that value future-oriented identity and cultural signaling.
