.info arrived in 2001 in ICANN's first expansion of the domain name system beyond the original six extensions, and was the only one of that round opened to anyone with no eligibility test at all. Afilias ran it for nearly twenty years until Donuts acquired the company in 2020; both were folded into Identity Digital in 2022. It has grown sharply again in recent years, largely on registrar promotions rather than a change in who uses it.

Usage and applications

.info is used for reference sites, documentation, product information pages, directories and public-information projects, where the extension describes what the site is for rather than who owns it. It has no flagship site the way .org has Wikipedia. The best known .info address, aboutads.info, now redirects elsewhere. In practice it is a cheap, unrestricted, widely recognised extension: our own WHOIS observations show it has one of the lowest suspension rates and one of the lowest digit shares of any large extension, which means the names being registered read like real words rather than bulk output.

Is .info taken seriously, or does it look like spam?

It carries some reputational baggage from an era of cheap bulk registration, but the current data does not support the reputation: our WHOIS observations show .info has one of the lowest registrar-suspension rates and one of the lowest digit shares of any large extension. The names being registered read like words, not machine output.

What was .info created for?

It was ICANN's first attempt to relieve pressure on .com by adding a general-purpose extension. Unlike the others in that 2001 round, it was open to anyone from day one with no eligibility test, which is why it grew far faster than its peers.

Why is the first year so much cheaper than the renewal?

Registrars discount the first year heavily to win the registration, and the renewal reflects the real wholesale price. Check the renewal figure before you register, because on .info the gap between the two can be tenfold.

Are there any famous .info websites?

Not really, and that is the honest answer. .info never produced a flagship the way .org produced Wikipedia. Its best known address, aboutads.info, redirects to another domain today.

Is .info good for SEO?

Search engines do not rank extensions differently, so a .info competes on the same terms as any other domain. Any difference you see comes from user expectations, not from the algorithm.

Who runs the .info registry now?

Identity Digital. Afilias launched and operated .info from 2001, Donuts acquired Afilias in 2020, and the two were merged under the Identity Digital brand in 2022.

How long can I register a .info domain for?

One to ten years, and you can renew for the same span. Our WHOIS observations show the overwhelming majority of new .info registrations are taken for a single year, which is typical of extensions with heavy first-year discounting.

Can I register a .info domain anywhere in the world?

Yes. There has never been a residency, nationality or business requirement, and there is no documentation to file.

Does .info support non-Latin domain names?

Yes, internationalised domain names are supported, though they remain a very small fraction of registrations, a fraction of one per cent of the new .info names in our records.

If you are an organisation, .org says so and carries more weight. If the site is the information (a reference, a manual, a directory), .info describes the thing itself and will have far better name availability.
