What happens to them
Measured across 2025.
Estimates rounded from our own WHOIS observations. Last measured September 2026.
Why choose .lol?
Instantly readable: everyone already knows what the three letters mean.
Short, which keeps the whole address compact even with a longer name in front.
Excellent availability, including common words that vanished from .com decades ago.
A natural fit for comedy, memes, entertainment and joke projects.
Frequently promoted at around a dollar for the first year.
Supports DNSSEC through most registrars for added DNS integrity protection.
History
.lol takes the internet's most recognisable shorthand and turns it into an extension. XYZ.COM signed the registry agreement in January 2015 and it was first delegated to Uniregistry that April; IANA recorded the transfer back to XYZ.COM in March 2022. Volume has been driven almost entirely by registrar promotions rather than steady adoption, our own records show new registrations multiplying several times over in early 2026 on the back of one.
Timeline
Usage and applications
.lol suits comedy, memes, entertainment and anything deliberately unserious: a stand-up's site, a joke project, a short link for something funny. It has no flagship brand running its main site on the extension the way .io or .app do. The measured figures below are worth reading before you commit: two thirds of new .lol names contain a digit and a single registrar accounts for the large majority of registrations, both of which point at bulk activity rather than people naming things. That does not make it a bad choice for a real project, but it does mean the extension's volume is not evidence of adoption.

Key milestones
Can you take a .lol domain seriously for a business?
For a comedy or entertainment brand, yes. The extension is the joke and it lands. For a professional services firm it will read as a mistake. The word before the dot cannot rescue an extension that is telling your visitors to laugh.
Why did .lol registrations jump so sharply in 2026?
A registrar promotion. Our records show new .lol registrations multiplying several times over in a few months of 2026 and falling back afterwards, with a single registrar accounting for the large majority. That is a pricing event, not a change in who wants the extension.
Why do so many .lol domains contain numbers?
Around two thirds of the new .lol names in our records contain a digit, which is the standard signature of bulk registration, names generated in quantity rather than chosen. It is worth knowing about the neighbourhood before you move in.
Who runs the .lol registry?
XYZ.COM LLC, the company behind .xyz. It signed the original registry agreement in 2015, the extension was first delegated to Uniregistry, and IANA recorded the transfer back to XYZ.COM in March 2022.
Is .lol a good short-link domain?
It is short and memorable, which is most of what a link shortener needs. The catch is that extensions associated with cheap bulk registration are more likely to be treated with suspicion by spam filters and link scanners.
What happens to the price after the first year?
It rises substantially. A .lol promoted at around a dollar typically renews in the twenties or higher, so a name you plan to keep costs far more over five years than the first invoice suggests.
Are there any famous .lol websites?
No. Unlike .io or .app, .lol has not yet produced a widely recognised site running as its owner's primary address.
Can anyone register a .lol domain?
Yes. There are no residency, nationality or business requirements, and no documentation to file.
Does a .lol domain affect search rankings?
Not directly. Search engines do not weight extensions. The indirect effect is real though: if people hesitate to click a .lol link for a serious topic, that behaviour is something search engines can measure.
What was the first .lol domain?
The oldest in our WHOIS records is love.lol, dated 29 May 2015, which falls between the extension's delegation that April and the opening of its sunrise period in June.
