History

.sbs has had two lives. It was originally applied for by the Special Broadcasting Service, the Australian public broadcaster, which held it and never used it. ShortDot, a Luxembourg registry founded in 2017, acquired the string and relaunched it in 2021 under a new meaning, "side by side", positioned for social causes and charitable work. ShortDot's own chief operating officer conceded at the time that this was not a meaning of the acronym in common usage.

Usage and applications

ShortDot positions .sbs for social causes and charitable initiatives, but the registration record does not yet look like that. Our WHOIS observations show 45% of new .sbs names contain a digit, one in eight carries a hyphen, and every registration in our records was taken for a single year. That is the profile of bulk registration rather than of organisations naming a cause. The extension is genuinely cheap and genuinely short, which are real advantages, just be aware of what else is registered alongside you.

What does .sbs stand for?

Originally the Special Broadcasting Service, Australia's public broadcaster, which held the string without launching it. ShortDot bought it and relaunched it in 2021 as "side by side", a meaning its own chief operating officer acknowledged was not in common usage.

Is .sbs a good extension for a charity?

That is how the registry positions it, but the registration record does not match the pitch yet. With 45% of new names carrying digits, a charity on .sbs would be in unusual company, worth weighing before you put it on donation materials.

Why is .sbs so cheap?

Deep first-year promotions are how new short extensions build volume. Renewal is far higher than registration at most registrars, so price a name you intend to keep on the renewal figure.

Who runs .sbs?

ShortDot SA, a Luxembourg registry founded in 2017 that specialises in short strings and also operates .icu, .cyou, .cfd and .bond.

Will a .sbs domain hurt my email deliverability?

It is a genuine risk with any extension where bulk registration is common. Test sending before you commit, particularly if email matters to what you are building.

Why do so many .sbs names contain numbers?

Around 45% do in our records. That is the standard signature of names generated in quantity rather than chosen, which is what deep promotional pricing attracts.

Can anyone register a .sbs domain?

Yes. There are no residency, nationality or purpose requirements despite the charitable positioning.

How long can I register .sbs for?

One to ten years in principle. In practice every new .sbs registration in our records was taken for a single year, which tells you how the extension is actually being used.

Is .sbs worth it for a real project?

It is short, cheap and available, which are real advantages. The trade-off is reputational: you inherit whatever the rest of the extension is doing, and right now most of it is bulk registration.

What was the first .sbs domain?

The oldest in our WHOIS records is nic.sbs, dated 3 February 2021, the registry's own operational address, created before the public relaunch.
